The Toxic Trap of Micromanagement

I've been working with a client who recently experienced the detrimental effects of micromanagement. Their new boss, a former peer promoted to a leadership role, exhibited classic bullying and command-and-control behaviors: dominating meetings, dismissing ideas, and creating a competitive environment.

This isn't an isolated incident. Research shows that micromanagement remains a prevalent issue in many workplaces. It fosters distrust, erodes morale, stifles creativity, and threatens employee retention and well-being.

Why do some leaders fall into this trap? Often, it's a lack of confidence in their ability to scale their impact. The question becomes, "How do I maintain control while empowering others?"

Effective leadership requires a delicate balance:

  • Sharing power: Encourage autonomy and collaboration. Delegate decision-making and work.

  • Building trust: Foster an environment of open communication and respect. Monitor “air time” in meetings.

  • Embracing vulnerability: Admit your limitations and seek input. Examine the root cause of your “command energy.”
