Setting Boundaries as a First Step to Career Change
One of my coaching clients—a parent, partner, and professional seeking a career transition at 45—needed to create space in their day to explore possible next steps. They’ve been grappling with questions like “What do I really want from my life?” and “How do I reconnect with my creativity?”
As part of our work, we focused on building boundary-setting skills to ask for what they needed at work—more time to think and connect with what matters to them.
They bravely requested:
A reduced work schedule.
Removal from an anxiety-inducing project.
Permission to lead a workplace mindfulness course.
The result? All requests were approved without hesitation. They were somewhat shocked by the ease of asking and the immediate "yes."
What empowered this transformation?
Confronting and reframing fears about worst-case scenarios.
Approaching boundary-setting as a low-risk experiment.
Clearly articulating the values upheld by their requests.
The powerful lesson?
They rediscovered their ability to advocate for their needs and get what they wanted.
